Samurai Shodown, known as Samurai Spirits in Japan, is a competitive fighting game released in 1993, it is the first installment in the Samurai Shodown series.
In contrast to other fighting games at the time, which were set in modern times and focused primarily on hand-to-hand combat, Samurai Shodown is set in feudal-era Japan and was one of the first fighting games to focus primarily on weapon-based combat.

Samurai Shodown, also known as Samurai Spirits in Japan, is a fighting game series developed and published by SNK. The series is set in the late 18th century during the Edo period in Japan and features a roster of characters inspired by Japanese folklore and mythology.
The first game in the series, Samurai Shodown, was released in 1993 for the Neo Geo arcade system.
